Ice cream social to honor ‘Winks’

By GARRETT NEESE, DMG Writer

HOUGHTON — When the topic of conversation turned to Herman “Winks” Gundlach Monday, Audrey Frair had a story.

She was eating with the late Houghton architect and philantrophist at Gemignani’s when two people walked in with baseball caps. This displeased Gundlach; so much so, in fact, that he offered to pay for their lunch if they took their hats off.

Shortly after, another crowd of hat-wearers walked in.

“Turns out, he paid for everybody,” she said.

While Winks isn’t around anymore, he’s still contributing to a free ride — the Herman “Winks” Gundlach Memorial Ice Cream Social, which takes place Sunday at the Carnegie Cultural Museum in Houghton.

Free ice cream cones from Jilbert’s will be available from noon to 5 p.m. outside (hat-wearers, take note).

The day is meant to combine some of Winks’ loves: the former library building, helping local projects and ice cream.

Julie Gundlach, Winks’ daughter, has proposed that any donations go toward the Carnegie Cultural Museum. Also, she said, people will be able to share their memories of Herman Gundlach; either in front of the crowd, or privately.

“That will become a natural thing, people shouting out, ‘I remember,’” she said.

A photo exhibit of Gundlach’s life, assembled by Julie Gundlach and Ralph Raffaelli, will be on display inside the museum.

At 2 p.m., Frank Fiala will lead trolley rides showing off a selection of Gundlach’s buildings throughout Houghton and the Michigan Tech University campus.

There will also be musical performances by Milt Olsson and the MTU University Choir, Mike Irish, the Copper Country Suzuki Association and Fiddlehead with Oren Tikkanen.

Free parking for the event will be available on U.S. Highway 41 across from the museum.
